I Have a Beloved: A Poem by Persian Poet Mansur Al-Hallaj; Translated by Dina Al-Mahdy

I have a Beloved whom I visit in solitude—
Present, yet absent from every moment.
You do not see me listening to Him with my ear,
That I might grasp the words He speaks.

Words without form, without utterance,
Unlike the melodies of voices.
It is as though I were addressing Him,
Within my heart—from myself, through myself, to myself.

Present, yet absent; near, yet far—
Beyond the bounds of all description.
More evident than the innermost self to the imagination,
Yet more hidden than the faintest glimmer of thought.
